Suspension and steering: symptoms and checks

Common symptoms

• Knocking or clunking over bumps.
• Vehicle pulling, wandering or feeling unstable.
• Uneven or rapid tyre wear.
• Excessive bouncing or body movement.
• Steering play, stiffness or noise.
• Vehicle sitting lower at one corner.

Components that may be involved

Shock absorbers, springs, top mounts, anti-roll-bar links, bushes, ball joints, track-rod ends, wheel bearings and steering components can produce overlapping symptoms. Tyre condition, pressure and wheel alignment also affect how the vehicle behaves.

Why worn suspension matters

Suspension keeps the tyres in controlled contact with the road. Excessive movement or play can affect stability, braking behaviour, steering accuracy and tyre life. A broken spring or seriously worn joint can become a direct safety risk.
