Engine oil does much more than reduce friction. It forms a protective film between moving parts, carries heat away, suspends contamination, protects against corrosion and supports bearings, camshafts, hydraulic tensioners and turbochargers. Heat, oxidation, soot, fuel, moisture and microscopic wear particles gradually change the oil and consume its protective additives.
Why pay closer attention after 100,000 km?
A mileage of 100,000 km is not a point at which an engine suddenly changes, and the end of a warranty does not itself affect the oil. However, increasing age and mileage can bring higher oil consumption, more crankcase vapour, injector wear, fuel dilution, combustion deposits and an incomplete service history. The vehicle’s actual condition and use are therefore more important than the warranty date.
Why short journeys matter
During a short trip, the oil may not remain fully hot for long enough to evaporate condensed moisture and fuel. Repeated cold starts, stop-start traffic and extended idling can contaminate oil even when annual mileage is low. On some diesel vehicles, interrupted DPF regeneration can also contribute to fuel entering the sump and reducing oil viscosity.
What happens when oil is used for too long?
Depending on the engine and contamination, used oil can become too thin or too thick. It may provide a weaker lubricating film, circulate poorly when cold or form sludge and varnish deposits.
- Increased bearing, cylinder, piston-ring and camshaft wear.
- Hydraulic-lifter or timing-chain tensioner problems.
- Reduced turbocharger lubrication and cooling.
- Increased oil consumption or loss of oil pressure.
- Expensive engine or turbocharger damage.
Regular servicing cannot reverse existing mechanical wear, but it can help slow further deterioration.
The correct oil matters as much as the interval
Viscosity alone is not enough. Two oils marked 5W-30 can have different manufacturer approvals, additive packages and ash requirements. A DPF, GPF, wet timing belt or a particular engine design may require a very specific approval. CD-EX checks both the required specification and the correct oil quantity for the vehicle.
Why replace the oil filter at the same time?
The oil filter captures metal particles, soot and wear debris. As it fills, resistance to oil flow increases; if it becomes severely restricted, a bypass valve may allow some oil to circulate without normal filtration. Reusing an old filter also leaves contaminated oil and trapped debris in the system. CD-EX therefore installs a new quality oil filter with every engine-oil change.
Engine air filter
The engine air filter keeps dust, sand and road debris away from the cylinders, piston rings, airflow sensor and turbocharger. Abrasive material entering the engine can accelerate mechanical wear. A heavily restricted filter may contribute to reduced power, poor throttle response, increased fuel use, diesel smoke and incorrect airflow readings.
CD-EX inspects the air filter during servicing. Under urban, rural or dusty conditions, replacement at approximately 10,000 km may be reasonable, but the final decision depends on its actual condition and the requirements of the vehicle.
Fuel filter
The fuel filter prevents dirt, rust and other contamination from reaching the fuel system. On some diesel vehicles it also separates water. Modern high-pressure pumps and injectors have extremely small internal clearances, so contamination can cause damage far more expensive than timely filter replacement.
A restricted fuel filter may cause difficult starting, inadequate fuel delivery, hesitation, loss of power under load, fuel-pressure faults or limp mode. Replacement intervals vary substantially: it does not automatically need replacement with every oil change. CD-EX checks the vehicle requirements, service history and system condition.
Cabin or pollen filter
The cabin filter removes dust, pollen and road contamination from air entering through the heating and ventilation system. A restricted filter can cause weak airflow, slower windscreen demisting, unpleasant smells, increased blower noise and additional strain on the blower motor.
CD-EX recommends inspecting it during servicing and normally replacing it at least once a year, or sooner if airflow has reduced, an odour has developed or the vehicle is used in dusty conditions.
The CD-EX practical approach
We do not replace parts simply because a vehicle has reached one mileage figure. We consider the model and engine, required oil approval and quantity, age, mileage, driving conditions, service history, actual filter condition and any evidence of oil consumption, contamination or fuel dilution.
