Computer diagnostics is more than reading a fault code

A code identifies the system that detected a problem. It does not automatically prove which part has failed.

Modern vehicles monitor the engine, transmission, braking, steering, emissions and many electrical systems. Diagnostic equipment lets a technician read stored faults and operating data, but the information must be interpreted and checked against the vehicle’s actual symptoms.

What diagnosis can include

Fault memoryRead current, intermittent and historic faults from relevant control modules.
Live dataCompare requested and measured values such as airflow, pressure, temperature and component position.
Actuator testsCommand supported components to check whether the system responds correctly.
Practical checksInspect wiring, connectors, leaks, power supplies and mechanical operation where appropriate.

Why a code is not a parts list

An airflow fault might be caused by a sensor, wiring, an intake leak, EGR operation, turbocharger control or restricted airflow. A pressure code can be caused by the sensor, the system being measured or the pipe connecting them. Replacing the component named in a code without testing can waste money and leave the original problem unchanged.

When to request diagnostics

Important: clearing a fault code does not repair the cause. Some red warnings, overheating, loss of oil pressure or serious braking problems require the vehicle to be stopped safely rather than driven for a scan.

The CD-EX approach

We start with what the driver noticed, scan the relevant systems and use the available data to decide the next sensible test. Sometimes a scan provides a clear direction; complex intermittent or internal faults may require additional specialist testing.
