Essential vehicle maintenance: what matters and why

An NCT confirms basic roadworthiness on the day of the test. It does not replace regular inspection, servicing and attention to warning signs.

Preventive maintenance is not simply about passing a test. It helps the driver identify wear, leaks and deterioration before they become a breakdown, a safety problem or a much more expensive repair. The correct schedule depends on the vehicle, mileage, age and operating conditions.

A useful rule: scheduled items should be serviced on time, safety-related components should be inspected regularly, and new noises, vibrations, leaks or warning lights should be investigated rather than ignored.

Brakes

Brake pads and discs wear gradually, which can make a reduction in performance difficult to notice. Brake fluid also absorbs moisture over time, reducing its boiling resistance and contributing to internal corrosion. Warning signs include grinding or squealing, vibration while braking, pulling to one side, a soft pedal, a longer stopping distance or a brake warning light.

Any sudden change in braking performance requires prompt inspection.

Suspension and steering

Shock absorbers, springs, bushes, ball joints, links and steering components control tyre contact, stability and wheel alignment. Wear may cause knocking, uneven tyre wear, wandering, pulling, excessive body movement or instability under braking. A vehicle can still move while a component is worn, but handling and tyre life may be affected.

Tyres

Tyres are the vehicle’s only contact with the road. Pressure, tread depth, age, cuts, bulges and uneven wear all matter. Incorrect pressure can reduce grip, increase wear and affect braking and fuel consumption. Irish law requires at least 1.6 mm of tread, but condition and wet-weather performance should be considered before the legal minimum is reached.

Cooling system

Coolant controls engine temperature and protects internal cooling passages from corrosion and freezing. A falling level may indicate a leak from a hose, radiator, water pump, thermostat housing, EGR cooler or engine. Driving an overheating engine can damage the cylinder head, head gasket or complete engine.

Never remove the coolant cap from a hot pressurised system. A temperature warning, steam or rapid coolant loss requires the vehicle to be stopped safely.

Timing belt or timing chain

A timing belt must be replaced according to the specified age and mileage interval. On many interference engines, belt failure can allow the pistons and valves to collide, causing severe engine damage. A replacement commonly includes the related tensioners and, where appropriate, the water pump.

Timing chains do not all have a universal replacement interval, but rattling, correlation fault codes, poor starting or known tensioner and lubrication problems require investigation. Correct oil specification and regular oil changes are important to chain and hydraulic-tensioner life.

Battery and charging system

A weak battery may still start the car occasionally but can cause slow cranking, intermittent electrical faults and failure during cold weather. The battery, terminals, alternator output and starter performance should be checked when starting becomes slower or electrical behaviour changes.

Warning lights and fluid levels

Red warningUsually indicates an urgent safety or mechanical risk. Stop safely and follow the vehicle handbook.
Amber warningNormally requires diagnosis soon. Continuing indefinitely can allow a smaller fault to cause additional problems.

Oil, coolant, brake fluid and other levels should be checked correctly. Repeatedly topping up a fluid without finding why it is disappearing can hide an active leak or developing fault.

Lights, wipers and visibility

Headlamps, brake lights, indicators, wipers, washers, mirrors and glass are simple items but directly affect the ability to see and be seen. Worn wiper blades, poor washer operation and internal windscreen contamination are especially noticeable in Irish rain and low winter light.

Do not wait for the NCT

The NCT is an important basic safety check, but it only confirms the accessible and visible condition of the vehicle at the time of testing. It is not a warranty and does not replace regular maintenance by a mechanic.

The CD-EX approach

We explain the observed fault, the work that is recommended and which items can reasonably wait. Maintenance is prioritised by safety, risk of consequential damage and the actual condition of the vehicle—not by replacing every available part.
