Possible signs of brake wear or a fault

Grinding, scraping or persistent squealing.
Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel while braking.
Vehicle pulling to one side.
Longer stopping distance or a soft pedal.
Brake warning light or visible fluid loss.
One wheel becoming unusually hot.

Why inspection matters

The remaining pad material, disc thickness and condition must be considered together. The caliper slides, piston, flexible hose and surrounding components may also need inspection. Simply fitting pads to a badly worn, damaged or unsuitable disc may not provide the expected result.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. This can reduce boiling resistance and contribute to corrosion within the hydraulic system. Replacement requirements depend on the vehicle and service history; repeatedly topping up a low reservoir without finding the cause is not a repair.

Safety first: a sudden soft pedal, major fluid leak, severe pulling, grinding with poor braking or a red brake warning requires the vehicle to be stopped safely and assessed before further driving.

After replacement

Correct installation, clean mating surfaces, free caliper movement, appropriate tightening and a final operational check all matter. New friction components also require sensible bedding according to the part and vehicle.
